How to update a Garmin GPS?

If you're screaming at Siri or pulling in to look for an address, an onboard GPS unit is wildly useful. Simply put where you want to go, and - boom - you're well on your way. However, your Garmin device requires a current list of all mapped roads and highways to be effective. We've all heard of a scenario where your GPS starts taking you to a dark road that turns and turns until you find yourself at a dead end.

Roads and routes continue to change, and if you don't keep your GPS running, you're bound to the person who's cursed anywhere on your dashboard. Luckily, it's easy to keep your GPS unit updated, especially with Garmin Express software, which essentially lets the device plug into your computer and let the software work its magic. You can use Express whether you've found any other model in the lineup of Drive, DriveAist, Zumo, Garmin Nuvi, or Garmin. Here's an easy, step-by-step guide on how to update a Garmin GPS.

Step 1: Connect your device to your computer

Before you start updating, connect your Garmin GPS device to the computer. To do this, remove it from your car, truck or motorcycle, and make sure the device is turned on. Using a mini USB cable, hook up the GPS to your laptop and wait while scrolling the progress bar. If you have connected the device before, the prompts should start automatically. If this is your first time, you may have to sign in to your Garmin account manually before you can start.

Step 2: Install Garmin Express

Next, you need to make sure that Garmin Express is installed on your computer by navigating to the Garmin Express download page or downloading for Windows or downloading for Mac. Once the appropriate file is downloaded, click the Install button and follow the prompts on the screen. As mentioned above, Garmin Express works with all GPS units including Drivesef, Nuvi and Zumo.

Step 3: Access or purchase updates

Now it's time to install your updates. If Garmin Express is not already open on your computer after it is installed, select it, and make sure your Internet connection is working correctly. Click Add Device and find your GPS. The app will search for any available updates and provide you with a list. Select All and keep your device connected when you install the update. Once completed, you'll have all the available apps that are either free or standard with your device. If you haven't purchased lifetime updates, you may need to buy them at this time.

Step 4: Disconnect your device

When you've completed installing free updates (or buying anything new), choose Eject to securely disconnect your device and unplug the USB cable. Once unplugged, just install your GPS back in the vehicle you want, and make sure your directions (expected) will remain accurate.
